Access and upload your most recent Tax Return Transcript

Accessing your tax return transcript is a common task, whether you're applying for a mortgage, a student loan (FAFSA), or just keeping your personal records tidy. It is completely free and much faster than requesting a full copy of your return.

Here is a step-by-step guide to accessing your transcript online immediately.

How to Get Your Tax Return Transcript Online

1. Preparation

Before you start, ensure you have the following ready to verify your identity via ID.me (the IRS's secure sign-in partner):

  • A valid photo ID (Driver’s license, State ID, or Passport).

  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

  • A smartphone or computer with a camera (to take a selfie for verification).

2. Access the IRS "Get Transcript" Tool

  • Visit the official IRS website: IRS.gov.

  • Click on the "Get Your Tax Record" button on the homepage.

  • Select "Get Transcript Online."

3. Log In or Create an Account

  • You will be redirected to the ID.me login page.

  • If you already have an ID.me account, sign in.

  • If not, select "Create an ID.me account" and follow the prompts to upload your ID and verify your identity.

4. Select the Correct Transcript

Once logged in, the system will ask why you need a transcript (e.g., Mortgage, Higher Education/FAFSA). Selecting a reason helps filter the types, but you can also select "Other."

Look for these four categories on the next screen:

  1. Tax Return Transcript: This is what most people need. It shows most line items from your original return.

  2. Tax Account Transcript: Shows basic data like marital status and any adjustments made after you filed.

  3. Record of Account: A combination of the two above.

  4. Wage and Income Transcript: Shows data from W-2s, 1099s, etc.

Tip: For the most recent tax year, click the year listed under Tax Return Transcript. A PDF will open in a new window, which you can save or print.

Alternative: Get Transcript by Mail

If you cannot verify your identity online or prefer a paper copy:

  1. On the "Get Your Tax Record" page, select "Get Transcript by Mail."

  2. Enter your SSN, Date of Birth, and the exact mailing address used on your last tax return.

  3. Select "Return Transcript" and the year you need.

  4. The transcript will arrive at your address on file within 5 to 10 business days.
